10 New Shows to Watch

jay - September 9th, 2008 - 1 Comment »

As the fall season is upon it brings us to a decision, “what should my DVR record?”  Here are my top 10 suggestions for you to add to your regularly scheduled recordings:

10. “90210″ - We loved it in the 90’s and it picks up right where it left off…at least before it got all weird.  Set it to record Tuesdays at 7p on the CW (channel 6)

9. “Crusoe” - A castaway and his native friend endure the perils of living on a deserted island in this adaptation of Daniel Defoe’s classic novel starring the “Tudors” Sam Neill.  You can record Crusoe on the wide open Friday Nights at 7p on NBC (channel 12)

8. “My Own Worst Enemy” - The division between a suburban father and his super-spy alter ego breaks down after an implant in his brain begins to malfunction, leaving his two identities fighting for dominance. I always liked Christian Slater, but I have my doubts about this show.  Still it looks interesting enough and in a perfect time slot for us to record on Mondays at 9p on NBC (channel 12) against the tired and worn out plots of “CSI Miami” and “Boston Legal”.

7. “The Ex-List” - So here is the description: A thirtysomething woman revisits past relationships to find her soul mate after a psychic informs her one of them is her future husband, but if she doesn’t locate him within a year she is destined to remain single for the rest of her life.  Again this show has potentional and stars  Elizabeth Ann Reaser who played the injured pregnant woman on “Grey’s Anatomy”  who didn’t speak but just communicated with her eyes.  You can record “The Ex-List” on Friday at 8p on CBS (channel 5).

6. “Life on Mars” - From the never could happen department: A modern police detective wakes from a coma to find himself working as a cop in 1973, and must readjust to life even as he seeks a way back to his future.  This show could be really good, or really bad.  You can take a chance and record it while you are watching the final season of ER Thursdays on ABC at 9p (channel 15).

5. “Do Not Disturb” - How can you go wrong with a lady names Nicey?  Nicey Nash and Jerry O’Connel anchor the new Fox comedy about a staff at an ultra hip New York City Hotel.  It’ll be a good option for comedy and you can record “Do Not Disturb” on Wednesdays without conflict at 8:30p on Fox (channel 10), that is unless you are recording “Private Practice” and “Deal or No Deal”.

4. “Worst Week” - If you enjoyed “Meet the Parents” you enjoy this: An engaged man tries desperately to impress his fiancée’s parents but his attempts inevitably end in disaster. You would think “Worst Week” is just a rip off of that movie with Ben Stiller, but actually it based off a British Comedy.  And if the other American adaptations of British comedy are any indication of how good “Worst Week” will be, just sit down and watch an episode of “The Office.”  It will be tough to record “Worst Week” with “Prison Break” and “Heroes” in the same time slot…but if you can squeeze it in, its on Mondays at 8:30p on CBS (Channel 5).

3. “Kath & Kim” - Speaking of foreign comedies: “Kath and Kim” is a comedic look at the contentious relationship of a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo and their adventures in middle-class suburbia. This American remake is based on the Australian show of the same name.  “Kath and Kim” has the all-star cast of Molly Shannon, Selma Blair, John Michael Higgins and Mikey Day.  Should be a great show and a easy one to record between “My Name is Earl” and “The Office” Thursdays at 7:30p on NBC (channel 12).

2. “Knight Rider” - Some people think nobody can be Michael Kinght like The Hoff, well their right.  This new “Knight Rider” series is about Michael Knight’s son.  Best of all KITT returns as an over the top Ford Mustang.  The show will be the same basic plot from the the original from the 80’s and will even feature appearances from The Hoff himself.  If you are watching “Pushing Daisies”, “America’s Next Top Model” or “Bones” this will be a tough show to catch.  But is you have the space record “Kinght Rider” on Wednesdays at 7p on NBC (channel 12).

1. “Fringe” - From the absouletly crazy and fabulous mind of J.J. Abrams comes “Fringe.”  What is it about?…well that is always the question with J.J., but it involves a FBI agent, a Mad Scientist and a Con Man.  How can you go wrong with the guy that created “Alias” and “Lost”?  If you are not into “Dancing With the Stars” or “Biggest Loser” you can record “Fringe” on Wednesdays at 8p on Fox (channel 10).

Enjoy the new fall season!

Smash the Americans?

jay - August 11th, 2008 - 3 Comments »

France’s Alain Bernard when asked about the American Swim Team said: “The Americans? We will SMASH them.”

It wasn’t the case, in the last leg of the race it looks like France’s anchor Bernard had the race won for France. Then like drafting in a NASCAR Jason Lezak came from behind and won the gold for the Americans. Even if the French had won, they would not have smashed them. It was a bold prediction that fell short because of the Heart of the American team that were determined to win.

GO U.S.A!!!

24 casts John vs Jack

starcar - June 13th, 2008 - 2 Comments »

John VoightJohn chose Jack over his own daughter. John Voight has been cast on ‘24′ for the upcoming season that will premier on November 23rd with a 2 hour episode. In the episode we’ll be introduced to John’s character who will be the next nemesis and season 7’s terrorist threat.

The real story (according to In-Touch Weekly) is that John chose to go audition for the TV Role over attending the birth of his twin grandchildren. But how can that be true??? When was the last time Angelina even spoke to her father??

Should make for an interesting season of ‘24′, although November seems very far away.

My DVR cut it off

Simon was wrong, and David Cook was crowned the American Idol of Season 7. Cook was the right choice, he’ll be a better representative for Idol and potentially have one of the most successful Idol careers.

My complaint comes from Cox Communications. Last night I was watching the Idol Final on my DVR, because who can watch the show live? I get to the end and Ryan Seacrest his doing his dramatic thing…and then the recording stopped. If I hadn’t recorded the 9pm news on Fox I would not have seen who had won. One would think with today’s technology Cox could figure out how to keep the DVR recording when the show goes long.

American I-Dull Finals

starcar - May 21st, 2008 - No Comments »

The one thing we do know is that the winner of American I-Dull will be named David. After watching the final performance show last night I came away with the feeling that nobody wanted David Cook to win. Randy, Paula, Simon, Ryan the producers all were saying how great David Archuleta is.

In my opinion, because this my blog, I don’t think David Archuleta would be a good winner. Sure he is cute, adorable, and humble…but he can’t sing an upbeat song to save his life. And isn’t that what Simon is always saying; we (American Idol) are looking for someone that could produce a modern, current upbeat album. Last night for the finals David A. sang nothing but ballads, even redoing a song he sang before John Lennon’s “Imagine.” If David Archuleta wins tonight he will fade away into obscurity just as Ruben, Fantasia, and Taylor.

David Cook on the other hand, I’m sure that he will have a career even if does not win. Just like Clay Aiken, Kelly Pickler, and Daughtry who all did not win the competition, but did go on to have successful careers. Although I have not given up hope. If America’s Next Top Model can have a plus-size model win, then American Idol can finally have a rocker win.

American I-Dull Continues

starcar - May 14th, 2008 - No Comments »

After the lowest rating for a final four show last week the boredom continues. This week the final three had the judges choose a song, the contestants themselves choose a song, and then they preformed a song the producers choose for them.

I have to say with so many song choices I was hopeful that there would be some excitement injected into the night. But every song fell into being predictable and boring.

David “the teenager” Archuleta sang three songs that are for a lack of a better phrase “old” for a teenager. David sang Paula’s choice: Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes”; his choice: Chris Brown’s “With You”; and the producer’s choice: Dan Fogelberg’s “Longer.” He should be singing fun upbeat songs that display youth, and excitement. How many ballads will he sing, that is all he sings. Honestly if he wins there is no way that he will have a successful career because he is just a cabaret singer.

Syesha “the actress” Mercado approached the night as if she was trying out for a Broadway play. Randy had Syesha start the night with “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys, then she choose Peggy Lee’s “Fever,” and the producers choose “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell. There is no way if she continues down this path that she could have a successful career as a recording artist. This is not to say that she will not have a successful career; I think she would be great on Broadway, but that is as far as it goes.

David “the bartender” Cook, I-Dull’s resident rocker seemed to be the only one trying win last night. Simon choose Roberta Flack’s “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” then he choose Swtichfoot’s “Dare You to Move” for himself and the producers choose “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for David. He performed them all only as David Cook could, as a rock star, but that was predictable and not very entertaining. There was a time on this show David introduced us to new arrangements to popular songs, he was being very original and now that is gone. What saved the night for David was that Simon said that he had “won” the night.

I am no conspiracy theorist but one might have case that show was set up for David Cook to succeed and to have Syesha and David A. fail. Tonight will be another results show, I’ll be sure to flip over for just the last 5 minutes so I can find out who stays and who goes. Maybe the finals will be more exciting…there is always hope.

**UPDATE 5/15**
With Syesha out last night, that leaves the two Davids to battle it out in the finals next week. I think David Cook should win, but given the shows history, David Archuleta will most likely pull it out. Check back to the blog and I’ll give you all the details so you don’t have to waste your time.

American I-Dull

Is anybody watching American Idol anymore? If you are, you are most likely as bored as I am with the contestants. Plus the mentor choices this year in my opinion did not help. Neil Diamond, Andrew Lloyd Webber and having the Beatles complete work for two weeks does not scream excitement. And where is our outstanding personality…good or bad? Last year we all had Sanjaya to laugh at and we would tune in each week just to see if he was voted out.

It is the seventh season of American Idol, but not much has changed in the format of the show. Plus who really wants to watch 4 people sing songs for two hours. Then come back the next night to watch a recap of the night before for 50 minutes. Is American Idol asking too much of it’s viewers?

Apparently not…According to the Neilsen ratings the show is averaging 28.7 million viewers, down 7 percent from last year. But with that said American Idol still has more viewers than CSI, Grey’s Anatomy and Survivor.

American Idol gets rid of one more tonight…I’ll waste my time and watch “American I-Dull” for you each week, you can just check back to the blog here to see who stays and who goes.

Fergie sounds better on CD

starcar - March 31st, 2008 - No Comments »

The Tempe Music Festival was this weekend, and let me say for the most part it rocked. Cowboy Mouth rocked, Eve 6 was fantastic (although it looked like they were mad at each other), The Gin Blossoms were fantastic even including their son in act, but the big disappointment to me was Fergie…

After taking the stage and telling us she was not pregnant she went on to sing…kind of. She must have been having an off night vocally, or her producer did wonders for her on her album. Then half way through the act she left her band on stage to perform solos while she took her sweet time to change. All in all Fergie maybe preformed 6 of her own songs.

To me it seemed liked Fergie rather be anywhere than on the stage at the Tempe Music Festival. It was the Gin Blossoms, Eve 6 and Cowboy Mouth who all rocked and out preformed “The Dutchess.” It was a great weekend of music despite the weak performance from Fergie.

Irish Idol?

starcar - March 12th, 2008 - 1 Comment »

Will find out tonight who is the first of the top 12 voted off American Idol, and it will be a tough choice. Last night most of the performances were horrible even though AI says this is the best top 12 EVER! David A. who is supposed to be the front runner forgot the words to his song. But even with that he is not the one that I want voted off.

I want Carly Smithson to go. She keeps talking about how she is Irish, her family is Irish, and she misses all her friends in Ireland. I thought we were looking an American Idol, not and Irish Idol. If she doesn’t go this week lets band together and get her to go next and remind America, it is their Idol.
